BioEYES: Teaching 3rd grade about zebrafish

The BioEyes Winter Study brings tropical Zebrafish to 3rd and 4th grade classrooms at Williamstown, Brayton, and Greylock Elementary schools.  Elementary students breed zebrafish and then study their development and pigmentation over a one week period.  Williams students adapt lesson plans to the science curriculum for the classes they work in, work with classroom teachers to introduce concepts such as genetics and development, and assess student learning.  No zebrafish or science experience is necessary.  During the first week of Winter Study, Williams students will stay on campus and learn about setting up fish matings, embryonic development and the genetics of fish pigmentation. Additionally, students will practice teaching their BioEyes lessons. In the subsequent two weeks, Williams student will work actively in the elementary schools, and in the final week, students will write a paper summarizing their data and experience in the program.
