Connecting Campus to Community through joint Trail Efforts

CLiA has worked with local trail organizations to create a series of trails to be cleared and maintained in the area in and around Williams College campus. The aim is to introduce Williams students to the trail work in the community and learn about the outside organizations that create and maintain trails in the Berkshires.

Levels of Involvement

One Day Trip: Contact Colin Ovitsky to organize a trail crew day trip or jump on board to one of our regularly scheduled trips (weather permitting). No experience necessary.

Intermediate: A couple of trips without any long term commitment. Did you have fun on your day trip? Join our pick up trail crew. No experience necessary.

Volunteer Trail Crew leader: Are you experienced on these trails? Have you been on multiple CLiA trips? Do you feel comfortable directing others to use the tools? Become a trail leader.

WOC also has initiatives for more serious trail work and long term trail work. Learn about their summer interns and QUAY fellows.

Transportation

Trails within walking distance (see trail map.) Other local trails in the community are within easy driving distance in and around North Adams.

Trail Clean-Up Protocol

 

Clean up usually involves three kinds of work- brush clearing, garbage collection,  and weed removal

Brush Clearing- wear work gloves, use small saws, grass whips, clippers, move brush to leader-designated places along the trail

Garbage Collection- wear gloves, load garbage into black bags, recyclables into clear bags (all available from the Center for Learning in Action)

Weed Removal- wear work gloves. Main invasive weed target:  garlic mustard (images available from CLiA or online), load into grey bags (available at CLiA) Other targets given by host organization (HoorWA, Town of Williamstown or WRLF ).

Wear work gloves, long pants and sturdy close-toe shoes.

Remove brush, trash and recyclables from the work areas as directed by host organizations

Work only in areas designated by your host organization and trail leader

Check for ticks at end of work period and later at the end of the evening
